They are a kind of light, but your eyes can't see them. They come from so far away that they arrive in straight, side-by-side lines, like rain falling straight down on a windless day.

A dish has a special curve called a parabola. Every wave that hits it bounces to the same spot, the focus. Put a small catcher there, called the feed, and it collects the waves from the whole dish at once. A bigger dish catches more waves, so it hears fainter things.

A horn works a different way: it is a big metal-lined funnel that steers the waves down into a box at its narrow end. It is easier to build, but it hears a wider patch of sky, so its view is blurrier.

Inside the feed, a short copper wire called the probe turns the waves into a tiny electric signal.
